In the 2008 Catholic Press Association awards competition, a Catholic San Francisco editorial won recognition for the ninth consecutive year, while the newspaper also was honored for a special supplement on senior living. The 2008 award winners, which were drawn from entries submitted by Catholic diocesan newspapers throughout the United States and Canada, were announced at the annual Catholic Media Convocation, held May 28 - 30 in Toronto, Canada.  
"Danger, they're back," an editorial on assisted - suicide written by Maurice E. Healy, associate publisher and executive editor, received second place honors in the category of "best editorial on a local or regional issue" among large diocesan newspapers. Catholic San Francisco editorials have won awards in each of the past nine years. This is the seventh year that Healy has received recognition for editorial writing.
In the 2008 competition, covering work completed last year, Catholic San Francisco also took second place honors in the category of "best regular special supplement with an editorial emphasis" among diocesan newspapers of any size. Award judges said the newspaper's special supplement on "Senior Living" contained a "nice mix of stories, with a very strong emphasis on the local." The award - winning supplement reflects the work of Advertising Director Joe Pena, Production Manager Karessa McCartney and Editor Dan Morris - Young.
Syndicated columnists Father Peter J. Daly ( Catholic News Service ) and George Weigel ( Denver Catholic Register ) , whose columns have appeared in Catholic San Francisco, received individual awards for their work in the 2008 CPA competition.

Since Catholic San Francisco was founded in 1999, the newspaper has won 40 Catholic Press Association awards including recognition for general excellence.
