Father Tom Daly named Auxiliary Bishop
(March 16, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Father Thomas A. Daly as auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of San Jose.
“On behalf of the clergy, religious and laity of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, I express sincere congratulations and best wishes to Bishop-elect Thomas Daly,” said San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer. “In all of his priestly work, Father Daly has been devoted to serving the people of the local church. While we will most certainly miss him and his many contributions to the archdiocese, we wish him well in his new post. May God bless him in his new assignment.”
“I congratulate Bishop-elect Daly on his appointment and I look forward to collaborating with him in my ministry as Bishop of the diocese,” said San Jose Bishop Patrick J. McGrath in a statement sent to personnel of the diocese March 16.
Bishop-elect Daly was ordained for the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1987. He is a graduate of San Francisco’s Sacred Heart High School – now Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory – and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of San Francisco, Boston College, and St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park.
Bishop-elect Daly, the first auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of San Jose, which was formed from the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1981, will be ordained to the episcopate May 25, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in San Jose.
Bishop-elect Daly is currently President of Marin Catholic High School and Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He has also served as pastor of St. Cecilia Parish in Lagunitas.
