FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAN FRANCISCO ARCHBISHOP AND AUXILIARY BISHOPS TO PARTICIPATE IN SEVENTH ANNUAL ‘WALK FOR LIFE WEST COAST’ – SATURDAY, JAN. 22
SAN FRANCISCO (Jan. 18, 2011) – San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer, leader of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco, and three bishops from the archdiocese will join tens of thousands of pro-life supporters in the seventh annual Walk for Life West Coast, which will take place on Saturday, Jan. 22. A rally begins at 11 a.m. at Justin Herman Plaza at the foot of Market Street, followed by a walk of more than two miles along the San Francisco Embarcadero to the Marina Green.
Archbishop Niederauer said, "The Walk for Life now is a tradition in San Francisco, an event that provides an opportunity for people of all faiths to witness for life and to raise concerns about the damage that abortion does to women, men, families and society. I believe the Walk for Life is inspired by the Holy Spirit, as each year more and more people come to support the cause of life. They come not only to walk and to witness, but also to participate in the liturgies, interfaith religious services and rallies that have become a part of this event. Many people have been deeply touched by the experience of the Walk for Life.”
This year the Walk for Life West Coast will be held on the 38th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion.
Archbishop Niederauer will attend the Walk for Life with Auxiliary Bishop William Justice, Auxiliary Bishop Robert McElroy and retired Auxiliary Bishop Ignatius Wang. Other Catholic bishops expected to attend include Oakland Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, Santa Rosa Bishop Daniel Walsh, Bishop Rutilio del Riego of San Bernardino, Stockton Bishop Stephen Blaire, Sacramento Bishop Jaime Soto and Bishop Tod Brown of the Diocese of Orange.
Founded in 2005 by a group of San Francisco Bay Area residents, the Walk for Life West Coast’s mission is to change the perceptions of a society that thinks abortion is an answer. It is a non-profit entity separate from the Catholic Church but one that the Archdiocese of San Francisco supports and encourages for its role in highlighting the intrinsic God given dignity of every human person from conception to natural death. .
