Statement in the Aftermath of the Las Vegas Shooting
Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone
Archbishop of San Francisco
October 2, 2017
The people of the Archdiocese of San Francisco stand in solidarity with the people of Las Vegas, in shock and horror at the killing and wounding of so many innocent persons on Sunday night. Our prayers are for the repose of the souls of the dead, for the recovery and restoration to health of the wounded, and for the comfort of the thousands of people who know and love the hundreds of victims of this violence. In our churches, schools, and homes this week, we will be praying in a special way for the healing of all who have been touched by this tragedy, and for an end to such hateful acts. We also offer prayers of thanksgiving for the work of all emergency and medical personnel who have responded with courage and skill to this unexpected and senseless violation of our human dignity.
I invite our parishioners to pause for a moment of prayer this evening at 5 pm, when the Diocese of Las Vegas begins their interfaith prayer service in the Cathedral of the Guardian Angels, on this Feast of the Guardian Angels. May the God of mercy hear our prayers.
