Job Description of the
Sacristan of the Cathedral

The vision presented here is in keeping with the philosophy of our Cathedral to foster, enhance and maintain the dignity of this mother church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The task of the staff of this Cathedral therefore, is to strive to project this exemplary image in terms of gracefulness, beauty and scholarship.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sacristan will be responsible for the following:
Masses and Special events: Set-up, take down, other duties as needed.

Taking care of the Sacristy:
Vestment closets, including applicable inventory control listing of the Archbishop’s vestments.

Sacristy safe: sacred vessels, microphones and liturgical articles
Flower prep room
Altar servers’ closet
Auxiliary room in upper sacristy
Cleaning the rest rooms: upper and lower sacristy, Docent’s restroom
Planning and managing the liturgical supplies: Placing orders on regular basis upon the knowledge and approval of the Parochial Vicar, your immediate supervisor.
Produce the liturgical ministers schedule in consultation with the Parochial Vicar.

He/She will also be responsible for:
The cleanliness of the main lobby vestibule, main floor, elevator, pews, marble floor sanctuary, Organ area, staircases and landing, Shrines, Chapel, and confessionals.
Watering and care of plants in the Cathedral, removal of dead arrangements and plants as needed.

Responsibilities related to Masses and Special events.
Maintain all liturgical vessels, making sure all are clean and polished.
Check to be sure all vestments are properly maintained at all times (launder & iron as necessary).
Oversee the changing of banners for liturgical celebrations according to the liturgical seasons.
Set-up for all Masses and take down following Masses.
Set up Sanctuary (mics, cross, altar cloths, light candles).
Prepare books (Sacramentary, Lectionary, Book of the Chair).
Prepare all liturgical vessels for Mass.
Turn on the sound system.

Determine the number of ciboria and hosts needed and set up hosts and wine.
Set up vestments for priests and deacons.
Prepare incense and processional candles.
Between Masses put things away and set up for the next Mass.
Distribute collection baskets & assign collection bags. If there is a special extended collection campaign, place envelopes where needed.
Place parish bulletins out after each Mass and retrieve before next Mass.
Bring out Gift table and cloth.
Select and assign Gift bearers as needed.
Help select ushers in absence or tardiness of Head Ushers: oversee collection: oversee the placing of collection bags in safe, prepare written report for collection.
Help with set ups and clean up for Baptisms
Set up for the first Mass on Monday.

1. For Sacristy responsibilities: Parochial Vicar

Repairs, Mechanical & Otherwise:
1. Promptly communicate all necessary repairs (mechanical, electrical, trip or injury hazard, etc.) to the Cathedral Facilities Manager

Status: Non-Exempt
Supervisor: Parochial Vicar
Pay Range: $18-$21 / hour
