Mary of Nazareth, Myths and Realities: A Journey with Mary, Mother of God, and Our Mother
“He knew His mother in predestination, even before He was born of her; even before, as God, He created her of whom, as man, He was to be created, He knew her as His mother” (Trac. Rev. Gregory Heidenblut, O.S.A., DD, will continue his annual lecture series during the Season of Advent with a challenging and informative discussion of Mary's role in the history of salvation. The five-week series will focus on the myths and realities associated with Mary the mother of Jesus. Is Mary's roll and importance overstated in the Latin and Orthodox traditions? Or do we need to reclaim her importance and status in the history of salvation? These questions and many more will be discussed during this informative journey into the life and place of the first Christian – Mary of Nazareth.
The lectures will begin the week of November 21st and continue each of the three weekday evenings throughout the Advent Season 2022. Lectures will be in the Church unless otherwise noted. All lectures will take place following the schedule below for the three parishes in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
Week 1: Who is Mary? An Introduction to Mary. What is a Dogma? What is a Doctrine and doctrine.
Wednesday, November 23 – 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Week 2: Dogma 1: Theotokos/Mother of God. Why must Mary be the Mother of God? Do Catholics worship Mary? Understanding of Dulia, Hyperdulia and Latria.
Wednesday, November 30 – 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Week 3: Dogma 2: Perpetual Virginity. Why must Mary be a perpetual Virgin?
Wednesday, December 7 – 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Week 4: Dogma 3: Immaculate Conception Eastern vs. Western Church.
Wednesday, December 14 – 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Week 5: Dogma 4: Assumption of Mary. Marian Apparitions: Approved vs. Suspect, Titles Given to Mary and Popular Devotions.
