Jubilarian priests honored at Cathedral celebration

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and fellow priests of the Archdiocese of San Francisco gathered on May 10 to recognize six Jubilarian priests celebrating 25- and 60-year anniversaries of ordination. The evening began with vespers in St. Mary’s Cathedral, followed by a dinner.
The Archbishop honored the Jubilarian priests at the dinner thanking them for their many years of service and dedication to serving God’s flock. “May God’s blessings be with you as you continue to make a difference,” he told the priests.
The Diamond Jubilarians celebrating 60 years of the priesthood were Bishop Daniel Walsh and Father Edward Phelan. The Silver Jubilarians celebrating 25 years of the priesthood were Father John Jimenez, Father Danial Nascimento, Father Narcis Laurent Kabipi, and Father Angel Quitalig.

Most Rev. Daniel F. Walsh
Ordained to the Priesthood: March 30, 1963
Bishop Walsh was born in San Francisco and raised in St. Anne of the Sunset Parish in the Sunset District. He was educated by the Sisters of the Presentation at St. Anne’s School before entering St. Joseph High School in Mountain View. He graduated from St. Patrick’s Seminary. Upon ordination, he was assigned to St. Pius Parish in Redwood City, followed by graduate studies at Catholic University of America. He then went to Junipero Serra High School where he taught. Bishop Walsh served in several capacities in the Chancery office as Assistant Chancellor, Secretary to Archbishop McGucken, Chancellor, and Vicar General. He was ordained Auxiliary Bishop to Archbishop Quinn on Sept. 24, 1981. In 1987, he was appointed Bishop of Reno-Las Vegas, then appointed Bishop of Las Vegas in 1995, and Bishop of Santa Rosa in 2000-2011. Bishop Walsh retired in 2011 and lived in residence at his childhood parish, St. Anne of the Sunset. He now resides at the Little Sisters of the Poor’s St. Anne’s Home on Lake Street in San Francisco.
Rev. Edward Phelan
Ordained to the Priesthood: June 7, 1963
Fr. Phelan was born in Ireland and ordained for the Diocese of Mobile/Birmingham, AL, now the Archdiocese of Mobile. He was incardinated into the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1981. He has served at St. Emydius, Church of the Epiphany, St. Brendan, St. Raymond, St. Elizabeth, Most Holy Redeemer, St. Mary Star of the Sea, St. Anthony of Padua, Novato, and St. Isabella. He initially came to the United States to visit his uncle, Fr. John Kenny, and Fr. Peter McDonald. Fr. Phelan was first assigned to St. Emydius for a year and was granted a three-year extension. He is a gifted homilist and has a deep understanding of people and their spiritual needs. This pastoral care has been acknowledged by the many tributes he has received over his years of ministry by grateful parishioners.

Rev. John J. Jimenez
Ordained to the Priesthood: June 6, 1998
Fr. Jimenez was born in San Francisco, CA, raised on the Peninsula, and was a member of St. Dunstan’s parish. He graduated from San Francisco State University and taught prior to entering the seminary. He graduated from St. Patrick’s Seminary & University. He has served at the parishes of Our Lady of the Pillar, St. Gabriel, Archbishop Riordan High School, St. Peter, and St. Charles Borromeo, both in San Francisco. He served as a chaplain at San Francisco General Hospitaln and from 2004 to 2005, he served in the Diocese of Torit, Nairobi, Kenya.
Rev. Daniel Nascimento
Ordained to the Priesthood: June 6, 1998
Fr. Nascimento was born in Macao, China and raised in Holy Name of Jesus Parish in San Francisco. He graduated from St. Patrick’s Seminary & University. He studied at the Center for Intensive Language & Culture of the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He also studied at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2004 to 2005. He served at St. Catherine of Siena in Burlingame, Holy Name of Jesus, and St. Brendan, in San Francisco. He is currently the pastor of St. Anne of the Sunset.
Rev. Narcis Laurent Kabipi
Ordained to the Priesthood July 12, 1998
Fr. Kabipi was born in Malya-Kwimba, Tanzania. He graduated from St. Paul’s Senior Seminary and ordained for the Diocese of Bunda, Tanzania. Before coming to the Archdiocese of San Francisco, he served in several parishes for 17 years. He studied at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley and obtained his Clinical Pastoral Eeducation (CPE) at St. Mary’s Medical Center and Sequoia Medical Center in Redwood City. He served at Our Lady of Lourdes/All Hallows and is currently the Administrator of St. John of God Parish and chaplain at UCSF/Parnassus Heights.
Rev. Angel Nues Quitalig
Ordained to the Priesthood: October 3, 1998
Fr. Quitalig was born in Capas, Tarlac, in the Philippines and was ordained in his home country in Makati City for the Society of St. Paul. He was incardinated into the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 2008. He obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Catholic University of America. He served at Our Lady of Mercy, Holy Name of Jesus, Mater Dolorosa and is currently the pastor of St. Mark in Belmont, and Judicial Vicar of the Metropolitan Tribunal. He serves as the Vicar for the Filipino Community of the Archdiocese and as Associate Liaison to the Charismatic Renewal of the Archdiocese.
