Rev. David M. Pettingill

Rev. David Pettingill passed away February 26, 2023, at the age of 86.  He was living in retirement at Saint Emydius Parish for the past 15 years.

Father Pettingill was born on February 7, 1937 in San Francisco.  Ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on June 9, 1962, he became Associate Pastor of Saint Patrick’s, San Jose and then Saint Patrick’s, Larkspur.  In 1963, he served as a faculty member of Marin Catholic High School and became Principal in 1976.  He was appointed to the faculty of Saint Patrick’s Seminary & University, Menlo Park in 1984.  Later in 1992, Archbishop John Quinn appointed Father Pettingill, Pastor at Saint Gabriel Parish, San Francisco, before being named founding Director of the School of Pastoral Leadership.  In 2000, he became Parochial Vicar of Saint Emydius Parish and Director of Diaconate Formation.  Father co-authored with Reverend Gerald D. Coleman, S.S, “Following in the Footsteps of Jesus” in 1998 and continued to be a weekly columnist for Catholic San Francisco focusing on each Sunday’s Liturgy of the Word.   

During his 60 years of ministry, Father reached out spiritually and touched many lives.
